Your data stays yours.
Effective 25 October 2026 · App: Brainback (com.toolparadox.brainback) · Published by ToolParadox, India
The short version
- Brainback counts short videos on your phone. It does not record your screen or read your messages, passwords or anything you type.
- Counts, to-dos, habits and settings stay on your phone.
- You sign in with an account (email and password, or Google). Our server keeps that account: your email address (and your name if you use Google), a random user ID, your language, time zone, app version and notification token.
- Only if you turn on Back up daily totals, a few numbers per day (reels, time in reels, Brain Score) are added to your account.
- We do not sell your data, and the app shows no ads.
- You can erase everything yourself: Help → Delete my data, or on the web.
What the Accessibility permission is used for
Brainback uses Android's Accessibility Service to know which screen is open in Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, LinkedIn and TikTok, so it can tell when a reel or short-video player is showing and when you move to a new video. It then adds 1 to a counter stored on your phone.
It reads
Which window is in front, and the on-screen names and labels needed to recognise a video player (for example a Share button). Password and text-entry fields are skipped entirely.
It never
Reads or stores messages, comments, search terms, names or video content. Sends screen content anywhere. Taps or types for you. Uses any of it for advertising.
The same permission lets Brainback draw its own on-screen counter and, when you set a limit or start a focus session, a block screen over those apps. While the counter or block screen is showing, the service briefly receives window-change notifications from other apps only to know when you have left the video app; it does not read their content.
You turn the permission on yourself, after an in-app explanation, and you can turn it off at any time in Android Settings → Accessibility.
What stays on your phone
Reel counts per app per day, time spent in reel feeds, to-dos, habits, streaks, limits, schedules, focus sessions, Brain Score and your settings. To show screen time, Brainback reads Android's usage statistics (the Usage access permission you grant). That is read on the phone and not uploaded.
What we collect, and why
| Data | Why | When |
|---|---|---|
| Account: email address, random user ID, and your name if you sign in with Google. Passwords are stored only as a salted hash by our sign-in provider, never in readable form. | Sign you in, verify your email, keep your Pro and settings across phones | When you create an account or sign in |
| Language, time zone, app version, push-notification token | Send notifications you allowed; show the right local day | After you sign in, and when they change |
| Subscription status (Free or Pro) | Unlock the features you have | After you sign in |
| Daily totals: date, reels, seconds in reels, Brain Score | Backup, and friends and battles features | Only if Back up daily totals is on |
| Crash reports and basic analytics (device model, Android version, app events, a random installation ID) | Find and fix bugs; see which features are used | While the app is installed |
We do not collect your phone number, contacts, location, photos, or the content of any other app. We email you only to verify your address, reset a password you asked to reset, or answer you.
Who processes the data
- Supabase hosts our database and sign-in (region: Mumbai, India).
- Google, if you choose Sign in with Google, tells us your verified email and name.
- Google Firebase provides push notifications, crash reports and analytics.
- Google Play handles purchases if you subscribe to Brainback Pro. We never see your payment details.
They act on our behalf. We do not sell your data or share it for advertising.
How long we keep it
Local data stays until you delete it or uninstall the app. Server data stays until you delete it in the app or on our delete page. Crash and analytics data is kept by Firebase under its standard retention periods.
Your choices and rights
- Delete everything: Help → Delete my data in the app, or use your data ID on the delete page.
- Turn off backup any time with the Back up daily totals switch.
- Stop tracking by disabling Brainback in Android Settings → Accessibility.
- You may ask to access, correct or erase your data, or withdraw consent, by writing to us. In India this covers your rights under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023; in the EU and UK, under the GDPR.
Children
Brainback is for people aged 18 and over and is not directed at children. If you believe a child has used it, contact us and we will delete the data.
Security
Data travels over encrypted connections, and each account can read and change only its own rows. No system is perfectly secure, so we keep what we hold to the minimum above.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date above and tell you in the app about significant changes.
